Creative Writing Instructor
Camp Location: UCLA
Camp Dates: July 30 - August 12, 2017
The primary responsibility of the Creative Writing Instructor will be to guide students through the Education Unlimited writing curriculum. Instructors will teach throughout the day, beginning with a specialized main morning seminar/workshop in fiction, narrative non-fiction, playwriting, or poetry (please be sure to specify your preferred area of instruction). In each of these units, the mission is to help students produce one quality sample for submission to teen publications and literary magazines and to immerse students in the genre through critical reading and writing exercises. In the afternoon, instructors will teach shorter elective units based on their writing specialties. Instructors will also supervise students during evening writing time and tutorials, and lead workshops on the practical side of writing, including publishing, revision, and reading your work out loud. Instructors must be writers with experience teaching creative writing at the high school or college level, and a passion for writing.
The ideal instructor will have significant writing experience, as well as classroom management skills. Most importantly, instructors should be supportive of student work and excited to help students improve their writing skills in the classroom and in feedback sessions. Instructors will also be responsible for tracking student work and handing in any deliverables to the camp director and EU home office.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, instructors should be available and willing to assist the camp director with active supervision, recreational activities, and some administrative tasks. Instructors are also expected to act as mentors, and will help lead literary field trips and guide students on excursions. With the support of the entire staff, instructors are responsible for the health and safety of students, in addition to fulfilling instructional objectives.
This is a residential position — room, board, and parking on campus is provided for the duration of the program. We will also consider instructors who wish to commute daily but preference is given for those candidates who are willing to live on campus and assist with dorm supervision. Instructors may be hired for one session or for multiple sessions of this program. Please indicate your availability on your application.
