Public Speaking Instructor 2018

Public Speaking Instructor

Camp Location: Tufts University (residential program) and MIT (day program)

Camp Dates: various sessions in July and August, 2018

The Public Speaking Instructor will guide students through the Education Unlimited Public Speaking curriculum to help them become more clear, confident, and effective speakers, and to help them enjoy public speaking activities. Instructors will teach rotating classes in delivery and/or debate, and will also teach an elective in the afternoons or evenings. Examples of electives include Model Congress, Model UN, Impromptu Speaking, Readers Theater, Negotiations, Policy Debate, and Oratory. Instructors will also help to organize a camp debate and assist students as needed in one-on-one feedback sessions. Most Public Speaking Instructors have a background in speech, debate, or drama and have experience teaching public speaking to young people. Instructors should be excited to help students build skills and confidence. Instructors will also be responsible for tracking student work and handing in any deliverables to the camp director and EU home office.

  • 2+ years’ experience teaching public speaking at any level.
  • Bachelor's degree required; preference given to those with an advanced degree.
  • A calm and professional demeanor.
  • The willingness and ability to work long hours.
  • Self-motivation and follow-through.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong people skills.
  • A passion for public speaking and communications.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, instructors should be available and willing to assist the camp director with active supervision, recreational activities, and some administrative tasks. Instructors should be mature, reliable, and able to work well with fellow staffers. Instructors are also expected to act as mentors, and will help lead field trips and guide students on excursions. With the support of the entire staff, instructors are responsible for the health and safety of students, in addition to fulfilling instructional objectives.

At Tufts, this is a residential position — room, board, and parking on campus is provided for the duration of the program. We will also consider instructors who wish to commute daily but preference is given for those candidates who are willing to live on campus and assist with dorm supervision. The program at MIT is a day program and instructors should be able to commute to campus daily.
